Addiction

Addiction takes hostages, but the addicts themselves are rarely the only victim; friends and family members are often equally terrorized by the substance abuse of their loved ones. These breakdowns must be handled gracefully, with great attention paid to the context of the addict’s situation and the family’s relational dynamics. Recovery Consultants can step into the whirlwind of addiction at many different points in the process, sometimes as interventionists from the very beginning, sometimes in the middle, when a client’s course of treatment is already in motion but they are in need of extra support.

With awareness of all the crucial relationships in treatment (therapists, group facilitators, technicians, psychiatrists, trainers etc.) Recovery Consultants can focus on client’s ability to connect and communicate with others and participate in their own treatment.

Additionally Recovery consultants work with those who are most impacted by the addict’s struggle by providing psychoeducation, therapeutic coaching, and support in boundary-setting for friends and family members. Your Recovery Consultant will work to improve communication between family members and the addict, while encouraging family members to evaluate their role in their loved one’s recovery.

Mental Illness

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, approximately 1 in 5 adults and adolescents in the United States (43.8 million) experience mental illness. The confusion, stigma, and often even guilt around a loved one’s mental illness can be sometimes more destructive than illness itself. There is so much misinformation about diagnoses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, PTSD, depression etc., that it’s easy for family members to become frustrated and hopeless when searching for help.

Recovery Consultants guide clients and family members through the complex and often long-term process of regaining mental health. Not only will your Recovery Consultant offer psychoeducation on the client’s condition, search to find the appropriate treatment match for your loved one, they will be constantly available for questions, concerns and requests regarding the case.

One of the significant services which Recovery Consultants provide is an enormous amount of insight into the element of medication in the client’s treatment. Often clients suffering from mental health issues struggle to connect with their psychiatrists enough to communicate their symptoms and side effects. The unique relationship between the Recovery Consultant and the client allows for the Consultant to participate in the client’s psychiatric treatment in a significant way. Your Recovery Consultant will provide coaching to the client on their explanation of symptoms and work together to refine the client’s communication skills. Additionally, the Consultant will provide regular feedback to the psychiatrist about the Consultants observations of the client outside of the clinical setting.

Eating Disorder

Eating Disorders are among the most dangerous psychiatric illnesses; they have the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric diagnoses and treatment is especially complex. Clients with Eating Disorders require a dynamic and multi-faceted treatment team who must maintain constant communication. Therapists, counselors, meal support technicians, psychiatrists, and nutritionists must all collaborate to provide thorough treatment. This is where the role of a Recovery Consultant becomes crucial. We find this collaboration among treatment team members to be one of the largest struggles in the treatment of eating-related compulsions and addictions, and your Recovery Consultant will work with the client, the family and the treatment team to ensure consistent and effective teamwork.

Eating Disorders are extremely complex, and thus their treatment must be very detail-oriented. Your Recovery Consultant will oversee your case so all details of the therapeutic goals, meal plan, medication regimen, behavioral observations and family dynamics are thoughtfully and collaboratively organized.

Additionally, Recovery Consultants work therapeutically with the family and support their participation in this process. By counseling family members through this experience your Recovery Consultant can address the impact of their loved one’s disorder upon the family, assist family members in setting and maintaining boundaries and coach them through their role in their loved one’s treatment.
